Jixiao's Buns: the steamed buns that are melting all over Paris

There are some addresses that make you want to go inside even before you see the front, just by the smell (or the line of foodies queuing to get in). That's what's likely to happen to you if you wander around the 2nd arrondissement.
Just a stone's throw from the Grands Boulevards, Jixiao's Bun is a Chinese restaurant featuring Sheng Jian Bao, Shanghai buns that are steamed and then grilled.
If you feel ready to fall in love at first bite, we urge you to take the plunge. There's no cheating here: everything is home-made, using traditional Shanghai street food recipes. And trust us: the results are stunning.

Soft yet crispy buns

The heart of the dish is of course the Sheng Jian BaoThese are plump little buns, filled to perfection and steamed before being lightly seared. Even if the menu is a bit monomaniacal, there's something for everyone: the classic pork and chives, the pleasant surprise of a chicken curry fusion and a vegetarian option that doesn't leave out the mushroom and cabbage flavour. You'll love the unique texture of these unique baos. For those who like gyozas, the principle is quite similar: you have a crispy base, a soft dough that melts in your mouth and this fiery filling that explodes your taste buds. And to make matters worse, the menu also includes stir-fried noodles, beef rice with just the right amount of flavour, and starters that are as simple as they are effective, such as garlic cucumber.

An ultra-gourmet and affordable plan

Jixiao's Buns is the kind of Parisian Asian restaurant where it's still possible to have a good meal. eating well for less than €15. The 'buns + side dish + drink' menu costs around €10, a more than reasonable price as you leave feeling full and satisfied.  The buns are available by the piece or by portion (generally 4 pieces per plate), so you can try everything without breaking the bank. Special mention goes to the service: fast without seeming rushed, just what you'd expect for an efficient lunch break or a relaxed dinner. You don't need to book, but you'd better come a little early: the dining room is small and fills up fast (same goes for the terrace and its few tables).

A little corner of Shanghai in the heart of Paris

The atmosphere inside is a little noisy, but full of life. You're often glued to your neighbours, but it's a good way to see what they've ordered and get an idea of what's on the menu. We particularly like the open kitchen and minimalist decor: white walls, colourful posters and bright lighting. It feels like a neighbourhood canteen in Shanghai. In short, you don't come here for a romantic candlelit dinner, but for a gourmet experience with no fuss.

Why do we love it?

  • Sheng Jian Bao, simply irresistible.
  • Unbeatable value for moneyfor home cooking full of flavour.
  • A varied offering despite its single-product positioning
  • The street food atmosphere that takes you on a journey to Shanghai

Jixiao's Buns is a good, unpretentious bao restaurant with great flavours. Don't miss it if you want to try some real home-cooked Chinese street food without blowing your budget.
