It’s a mission accomplished for Bleu Bao, which manages to transport us to China the moment you walk through its doors. Without leaving the vibrant 9th arrondissement of Paris, you find yourself transported by the decor (hanging lanterns and vintage finds), but above all by the aromas wafting from the kitchen. Don't expect to discover a postcard version of China, though. Here, the focus is on authenticity, large convivial tables and comforting dishes that keep the posers away. Plates that pop as much as the decor
Here, the menu is a love letter to South Chinese cuisine, with a few liberties taken to satisfy Parisian palates. The star is of course the bao, that little stuffed brioche, available in meaty and veggie versions to keep everyone happy. Crunchy vegetables, roast duck and pulled pork…. It’s up to you to choose the filling that will make you melt. All of them are spiced just right, as juicy as they should be, and none of them will leave you indifferent. But Bleu Bao isn’t just about baos. Their menu dim sum is also well worth a visit, with its delicious ginger ravioli and steamed prawn bites. Don't forget the beef cheung funs we loved these melt-in-the-mouth rice rolls coated in sweet and salty soy sauce. The good news is that Bleu Bao manages to stay affordable, despite its chic setting and growing community on Instagram. Starters are around €6 to €8, main courses between €13 and €18., and the sharing menus (a bargain not to be missed if there are two or more of you) allow you to try as many things as possible without breaking the bank. The drinks are just as worth the detour, in particular the cocktails made with oolong tea, fresh ginger, or exotic berries. Bleu Bao is also a place, an atmosphere: the walls are painted midnight blue, the handmade tableware is vintage without being cheesy, the gilding is subtle and the lighting is dim to protect your plate from prying eyes.
